Kia EV5 review

Kia EV5 review

Electric Sportage majors on comfort, space, and is competitively priced.

Martyn Collins

Considering that Kia has just announced it has sold half a million Sportage models in the UK, and with the move towards electrification continuing, the EV5 – effectively an all-electric version of this best-seller – is a model of its time.

What we do know is that the EV5 faces some tough opposition, including the Smart #5 we drove most recently, along with other strong C-segment electric family SUV rivals such as the Skoda Enyaq, and Renault Scenic.

Design and interior

Outside, the angular SUV shape of the EV5 is perhaps more conventional than Kia's other EV models, despite the brand's 'Opposites United' design language. It is not a bad-looking car and, in our opinion, looks best from the front, with its 'Star Map' light signature and 'Digital Tiger Face'. Flush door handles help the EV5 look sleek in profile, while the distinctive rear light signature is the highlight at the back.

Inside, think of the same interior design first seen in the EV6 back in 2021. The centrepiece is Kia's triple-screen layout, consisting of two 12.3in displays for the driver and infotainment, separated by a 5.3in climate control screen. It all works logically, while the physical controls are especially welcome.

The raised driving position is comfortable, and the faux leather-trimmed seats in our GT-Line test car were supportive. Move into the rear and both headroom and legroom are impressive.

At 566 litres, the EV5's boot is larger than the Smart #5's and even bigger than its larger sibling, the EV6. There is also the added practicality of a front boot (frunk) for storing charging cables.

Overall, the quality impresses, although the interior does not feel quite as special as some rivals in this class.

Performance and drive

Underneath, the EV5 is built on the same E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform) as Kia's other EV models, although here it uses a 400V electrical architecture rather than the brand's 800V system. The standard 81.4kWh battery offers an official range of 329 miles, although that is less than both the Skoda Enyaq and Renault Scenic. During the hot week we spent with the car, the indicated range was closer to 300 miles.

When it comes to charging, the EV5 has a maximum DC charging rate of 130kW, allowing a 10-80% charge in around 30 minutes on a suitably powerful charger, although this is a little slower than the Skoda.

There is only one front-wheel-drive powertrain, with a 214hp electric motor. Just like the EV3, it is set up to be safe, secure and predictable, which the EV5 achieves very well. While this Kia is tidy and comfortable to drive, those looking for a more engaging experience may be better served by the Smart #5.

We started the week with Kia's mid-sized electric SUV wondering where the EV5 fitted into the rest of the company's EV range? However, what we found was a comfortable, spacious and well-equipped family SUV that will appeal to Sportage owners looking to make the switch to electric motoring.

Having spent time earlier this year in the entry-level Air version of the EV4, we think the real value for fleet buyers lies lower down the EV5 range, although this is a fiercely competitive segment with plenty of capable rivals.

Positives: High-quality and spacious interior, comfortable and relaxing to drive.

Negatives: Average to drive, rivals charge more quickly and offer more range.

Standard equipment: 18in alloy wheels, 12.3in driver display, 5.3in climate control screen, 12.3in touchscreen navigation, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, rear privacy glass, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Highway Driving Assist 2.0 with Hands-on Detection, and Lane Follow Assist 2.0 with Hands-on Detection.
