Fleet Preview: smart #2

Fleet Preview: smart #2

Paris Motor Show marks the return of smart’s ultra-compact urban two-seater.

Exterior

Remember the original smart fortwo? The Swatch watch-inspired, sawn-off-style two-seater city car lasted 24 years and three generations – well, it’s back!

Now called the smart #2, it measures just 2,746mm in length, although that’s slightly longer than the last fortwo, which measured 2,695mm. Still, the new smart two-seater retains the chunky body and ‘wheels-at-the-corners’ stance that have defined the model since its first generation, along with the iconic split rear tailgate.

The most radical design departure is the curvier roof of the Tridion Cell Evo, its next-generation safety cell. The smart #2 also has a turning circle of 6.95 metres kerb-to-kerb, making it perfect for navigating tight city streets and parking in narrow spaces.

Interior

As with the old fortwo, the ‘wheels-at-the-corners’ design of the #2 maximises interior space within an ultra-compact footprint.

The interior of all #2 versions combines a continuous, bench-style seating arrangement, an S-shaped cockpit, intuitive operating modes and a clearly structured, open cabin. In the centre of the dashboard is a 10.1in central screen, paired with an 8.8in driver display. This enables 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, backed by an eight-year Connectivity Package that keeps the smart #2 continuously linked to its connected vehicle services.

A standout interior detail, is the smart Pillar in the dashboard, where small gadgets can be mounted for quick access on the go.

Powertrains

At the core of the #2 is its newly developed Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) platform, engineered specifically for the car. Power comes from a rear-mounted 60kW electric motor that delivers 130Nm of torque to the rear wheels.

The battery is a 35.8kWh LFP unit, which is expected to deliver up to 180 miles of combined range. It supports 65kW DC fast charging, taking the battery from 10% to 80% state of charge in 20 minutes.

The #2 also offers AC charging at up to 11kW, keeping it ready for daily city life without compromise. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability further extends its usability beyond the road.

Equipment

Two core trim levels of the #2 have already been confirmed for the UK market – Pure and Premium – alongside a limited Couture Edition.

All #2 models feature Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go and Highway Assist, as well as LED headlamps and taillights with automatic high beam.

Safety

The smart #2’s body structure is defined by the Tridion Cell Evo, the next generation of the safety cell that has characterised smart since its very first model. It wraps a robust structure around the cabin without adding to the vehicle’s compact dimensions.

Beyond structural safety, the smart #2 comes equipped with multiple driver assistance systems as standard, including smart Pilot Assist 6 and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go and Highway Assist.

Cost

Full UK pricing for the smart #2 will be announced later this year, with the model set to be available for less than £20,000.
